Just like in any other world of interest, many people have invented a lot of different kitchen gadgets to make your life easier. Some of them are very helpful, some of them work, some don’t. There are lots of gadgets for the kitchen that I use almost every day, others take up space in my drawers and I hardly ever use them, but some of those that I hardly ever use really come in handy sometimes, so they are worth the drawer space.
If you go to the tab on our website that says “Kitchen Gadgets” you will see a video or two of some of the kitchen gadgets that I am talking about. Someone made a comment about a couple of them. For instance, the apple corer. That is not a new gadget at all, but I guess some people may never have seen it before. Yes, you probably won’t use it very much, and as she said in her comment, a good paring knife will do the same thing. However, if you use a paring knife you are going to have to do all the things that an apple corer will do separately. With one push of the apple corer down on an apple, you have cored it and sliced it in perfect slices with one motion instead of three or four. So, the space that the apple corer takes up in my drawer is really worth it if I want to core a number of fruits at a time, it just makes it a lot faster. Saving time now days seems to be very important, not to mention your fruit will look a lot nicer for your recipes.
Another gadget that I find helpful is an avocado spoon. It looks like a knife with a tiny scoop at the end of the blade. This is very helpful to remove the pit of an avocado and also to remove the fruit of the avocado from the skin. It has just enough scoop on the edge to get under the pit and to get the rest of the avocado removed without having to tear up the fruit. You can then also use it to cut up the avocado into slices. Another one of those gadgets that is in your drawer for just the right time that you need it.
One of my favorite gadgets is my garlic mincer. This looks like a long knife with small grates on it so you can mince garlic or other veggies very quickly and easily. Having to mince up garlic by hand is very tedious and you have to be very careful not to cut yourself with the knife when it gets down to the very edge of the garlic. The term “mincing” means to make it very, very small. A regular grater might work, but a hand-held mincer makes it very small, almost into a paste, very quickly and again saves time and fingers. It also is easy to clean and can be thrown in the dishwasher if you like. Mine came with a cover from the blade end.
You will need a strainer or two in your kitchen. These are extremely handy to have when you are making things like spaghetti or need to strain the liquid off of anything really. I use my strainers a lot. When I want to make something that requires something in a can that needs to be strained, like tuna for instance, I always use my strainers to empty the tuna from the can into the strainer to get all the liquid off so it doesn’t make your recipe too runny. When you cook spaghetti or any kind of pasta, it has to be strained to get all the water of it. I have to pull out one of my strainers to remove all the liquid.
Strainers come in different sizes for the different jobs that they need to do. You can get them as small as a tea strainer for tea leaves, and as large as a huge bowl. They come in metal and plastic. I have several sizes in my kitchen and use them a lot. A strainer is not just a gadget, it’s a necessity as far as I’m concerned.
Well, I’ve talked about several kitchen gadgets today, I’ll talk about more soon. In the meantime, please tell your friends about our website!
