Whether you are 5 or 95 when you begin to do something new, you always get to be “the new kids on the block”. If you are new at cooking or baking, you will need to know what you are going to need to cook your recipe. You will need to know the definition of some cooking terms and some ideas about how to do things the basic way. Once you have learned how to do the basics, then later you will learn how to cut corners if you need to or to do substitutions to your recipes that will work as well as what the original recipe calls for.
I am going to try to start blogging a couple of times a week on the very basics of cooking. The tools you will need to set up your kitchen, definitions of terms and processes of doing things that recipes call for. We will start with very simple recipes that you can cook quickly to try out your wings.
If you are like me and my husband, when we were kids we would watch out mothers cook dinner in the kitchen and usually, especially when you are very young and are learning about everything, you would want to help. Sometimes if she had time, and some extra patience, Mom would let me help and would teach me some basic things about cooking. I know my mother-in-law would tell me about how my husband would want to try to help, but she had a very small kitchen and didn’t have a lot of room to have many people in the kitchen at one time. I believe her exact words were, “This kitchen is so small that you don’t have room enough to cuss a cat in it.” I also think that he might have wanted to help when she was in a hurry, but I think she sometimes would let him help and he learned some things. I think he really got more interested in cooking and baking when he got older. Our kids both like to cook and I get some really great recipes from both of them. It’s become a family thing to cook, bake and have great food together.
You too will be able to do these things with a little practice. On the next edition of “For Beginners” I will start with a list of some of the tools you will need to set up your kitchen. This will be very basic things that every kitchen needs, like measuring cups and spoons, etc.
Some people don’t ever set up a kitchen until they get married. Others are single for a while and will have some of the things they will need before they get married and will bring them into the kitchen that you will set up together. Registering for bridal gifts is a lot of fun, especially when it come to the gifts you want for the kitchen. You go to the store you register at and just start picking out the neat thing you want. If you’re lucky, you will get most or all of them and then it won’t cost a lot to get the extra things you haven’t got but need.
We’ll talk all about it in my next article. In the meantime, if you have questions, please post them, and I’ll be glad to answer then for you. Or, you may want to wait until we get started with the new information so you know what to ask.
Today happens to be my birthday, so my kids have decided that we are going to cook together. They are taking me to a Seafood Cooking class at Central Market in Dallas. We should have a great time! My kids are both hoots and when we all get together it can get out of control. LOL I really looking forward to tonight. Even though I have been cooking for years, I’m sure I will learn something new tonight, and I’ll probably share at some point what I have learned. Until then! Happy Cooking!
